DepHUB's Shamira Ahmed gave an online lecture on "Addressing Structural Inequalities to Bridge the Global AI Divide".
On 16th April as part of "The Digital Present: Global Practices" Course at the University of Amsterdam the DepHUB's Shamira Ahmed , who is also a policy leader fellow at the School of Transnational Governance gave an online lecture on "Addressing Structural Inequalities to Bridge the Global AI Divide", based on ongoing research for our flagship project on "African AI Futures: Transnational Governance for Society 5.0".
The lecture highlighted the multifaceted nature of persistent multidimensional systemic exclusions and their role in perpetuating disparities in AI capabilities worldwide, with potentially devastating intergenerational effects.
Structural inequalities in the digital economy, ranging from disparities in access to digital public goods (DPGs) to governance challenges, serve as formidable barriers that hinder opportunities to leverage advanced data-driven technologies such as AI and mitigate their associated risks. With disproportional impacts on the global majority, persistent existing systemic exclusions worsen within country and between country economic disparities which exacerbate historical dependency risks.
Key readings: "Why the G20 Should Lead Multilateral Reform for Inclusive Responsible AI Governance for the Global South,” T20 Policy Brief, June 2023.
